The General Purpose Alarm Device (GPAD) alerts persons to a problem needing attention by shining bright LEDs and making a loud noise. A 40-character display can be used to provide additional information. An alarm can be activated through the a serial port or an SPI interface. The GPAD supports 5 alarm levels of increasing intensity. It is driven by the need to produce a medical alarm for mechanical ventilator, but has wide applicability to alarm conditions, machines and processes.
